Dental Implants In VA
Replacing missing teeth with dental implants offers a permanent and attractive solution that functions similar to natural teeth. They are superior to other alternatives, such as bridges, because they do not require altering additional teeth.
The process of placing an implant takes a couple of months from start to finish. During the first part of this process, the implant itself is installed by placing a screw into the jaw bone. This is done by making a small incision in the gum where the implant will be inserted. If necessary, multiple implants can be placed at the same time. The gums are then sutured following the placement of the implants.
The implant is then allowed to heal over a period of 3 to 6 months. During this time, a process called osseointegration will occur, which just means that the jaw bone will begin to form around the implant. For aesthetic purposes, you can choose to have temporary crowns installed during your healing time. This not only will improve the appearance of your smile, but it will also allow you to eat and speak normally.
When your implant has fully healed, we will then be ready to place an abutment on your implant. An abutment is the base for your new tooth. With the abutment in place, we will then take an impression that will be used to create your permanent restoration. In some offices, an onsite lab is available to create a crown, but other offices will need to send it to an outside lab. When the crown returns to the office, you will then come back for a final placement visit to complete your dental implant. After a short period of adjustment, you will find that the implant feels just like one of your natural teeth, and your smile will be restored to its former appearance.
